Preparing for WorldSkills 2024

Hansen’s journey to WorldSkills began with his gold medal win at the 2023 SkillsUSA Championships, a competition recognizing the top high school and postsecondary students in trades like welding. Since then, he has dedicated 80-90 hours per week to training, working on test plates, mock competitions, and advanced welding techniques like pressure vessel exercises and stainless steel welding.

Much of his training takes place in Utah with former WorldSkills competitor Chandler Vincent, and in Missouri with Ray Connolly, a former gold medalist and current WorldSkills chief welding expert. Hansen also participates in “warm-up” competitions, including one in Australia where he earned a silver medal.

Hansen’s rigorous preparation includes competition simulations and exercises graded against past WorldSkills scoring criteria. His trainers praise his focus and determination, with Connolly noting, “His drive to bring home a medal is impressive.”

A Lifelong Passion for Welding

Hansen’s interest in welding began at a young age, inspired by his father and grandfather. At 11, he welded his first plates using a gas machine set up by his dad. Since then, welding has become a passion and an obsession for Hansen, driving him to constantly improve his skills.

A graduate of Uintah Basin Technical College and Utah State University Eastern, Hansen plans to continue his education in engineering and earn his Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential. He also dreams of exploring underwater welding and working in aerospace or starting his own welding business.
