Designing Stairs - Calculations and Standards

PDF guide on calculations for designing stairs correctly, including safety and ergonomic standards.

A staircase is essentially composed of a series of steps, which in turn consist of a tread (the horizontal part) and a riser. Several factors can improve the comfort of a staircase, such as the slight extension of the tread over the lower step, which increases the stepping surface without altering the overall dimensions of the staircase.

The following file was developed by Juan José Suárez for the Santa Lucía Institute in Cartagena and specifies how to obtain the optimal measurements for each step.
