A staircase is essentially composed of a series of steps, which in turn consist of a tread (the horizontal part) and a riser. Several factors can improve the comfort of a staircase, such as the slight extension of the tread over the lower step, which increases the stepping surface without altering the overall dimensions of the staircase.
