DIN Table for Welding Filters

How to adjust the correct darkening of your auto-darkening helmet.

DIN Table for Welding Filters

The radiation emitted by an arc or flame can damage workers’ eyes. To protect against radiant energy, workers must use personal protective equipment (PPE), such as welding helmets or masks.

This equipment must have a lens or filter with a shade number that provides adequate protection. The shade number indicates the intensity of light radiation allowed to pass through the lens filter to your eyes. Therefore, the higher the shade number, the darker the lens filter, and the less light radiation passes through the lens.

DIN stands for Deutsches Institut für Normung (German Institute for Standardization).

The following table indicates how to adjust the shade level based on the type of welding and the arc current in Amperes.

Auto-darkening helmets allow you to select, more or less, values between DIN 9 and DIN 13 in "darkened mode." The best helmets allow a maximum value of DIN 15.

When the filter is deactivated, the normal value is DIN 4, which can be uncomfortable in poorly lit environments. While total transparency would be ideal, we must be patient as current technology does not yet allow it.
